Is GRE required for the online MEEM degree?
No. Unlike many graduate programs, the online MEEM at UofL does not require GRE test scores for admission. We believe that relevant work experience, community involvement, strong letters of recommendation and a clear professional goal statement carry more weight than standardized test performance alone.
By evaluating applicants based on their demonstrated profession passion, previous work experience and interpersonal skills, we aim to build a strong engineering management cohort poised to create meaningful change.
Transfer prior college credit to UofL’s online MEEM
For students who began their studies at another institution but wish to complete their online engineering management degree at UofL, we allow the transfer of up to 6 (six) credit hours or roughly two courses, from an accredited university, upon department approval.
Stack graduate certificates to earn a master’s degree in engineering
Several graduate certificates offered within the J.B. Speed School of Engineering can be stacked towards a MEEM without requiring additional coursework. Eligible certificate programs include, but are not limited to the following:
- Analytics for Engineering Decision-Making (9 cr.hr.)
- Engineering Logistics Certificate (9 cr.hr.)
- Healthcare Systems Engineering Certificate (9 cr.hr.)
- Six Sigma Certificate (9 cr.hr.)
- Other online graduate certificates that may meet completion requirements (ex. AI in Medicine)
Students must achieve a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average to earn a certificate and only courses in which the student has earned a B or better may count toward the degree program.

Admissions requirements for the online MEEM
To be considered for admission, applicants must have:
- A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution
- A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA may inquire about conditional acceptance)
*Required application packet materials include:
- Transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree in science in engineering, math or related scientific field from an accredited institution
- Completion of a college-level statistics course and Calculus I
- A personal statement describing the applicant’s background and interest in engineering management or resume
- Two letters of recommendation

Online MEEM international student requirements
The engineering management program is open to international students. If you live outside the United States and intend to complete an online academic program from your home country, be sure to review these additional admission requirements for international students.
- International students will not be issued a U.S. visa, since there are no campus attendance requirements.
All courses in the program are taught 100% online, allowing you to attain the entire degree from the comfort of your home and at any time convenient for you, regardless of your current location, anywhere in the world.

UofL’s online MEEM is a 30-credit-hours program that requires completion of 10 courses (2 core courses and 8 electives). Candidates for the online engineering master’s degree must earn a minimum final cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all graduate courses for a successful degree completion.

Is a master's in engineering management worth it?

What bachelor’s degrees, other than engineering, are acceptable for admission in the engineering management master’s program?
UofL’s engineering management degree program requires a bachelor of science degree or its equivalent in engineering or related scientific field. Acceptable degrees may include physics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry and computer sciences. Bachelor's degrees in other fields, such as technology or social sciences degrees, are accepted so long as applicants have taken calculus I and a statistics course. We do accept students who may be lacking in these two areas. However, they may be conditionally admitted and required to complete the requirements as part of their program.
Is MEEM better than MBA?
It depends on what your goals are and what industry you are in. If your industry is predominantly focused around science and engineering, obtaining a master of engineering in engineering management over an MBA is probably the way to go. While an MBA covers broader business aspects, a MEEM program delves into the fusion of engineering and management, equipping you with expertise in areas such as corporate strategy, organizational design and technology integration. This specialized focus enhances your ability to lead in engineering-driven industries, setting you apart with a unique skill set that aligns precisely with technical innovation and leadership.
Can I receive credit for graduate courses completed at another institution?
Students may request department permission to transfer up to six (6) credit hours from another accredited graduate program.
I am an active-duty service member – do I get any tuition benefits?
Yes, at UofL, the engineering management degree offers a military-friendly® rate of $250 per credit hour for active-duty service members and Coast Guard members, as well as qualifying members of the Reserve Component and National Guard eligible for Title X (Federal) TA.
Active-duty is defined as on orders for 180 days or more. Service members must contact their installation Education Office or unit Education Officer for questions about military tuition assistant programs, before they enroll in any program.
